~ Schievelbein ~
There are several pockets of original Schievelbein settlers in America. It is still to be determined if and how they are all related.
What is certain is that THREE brothers from Germany came to America and two of them settled in south Texas and 1 settled in Nebraska. The eldest brother came over in 1874 and the youngest in 1878. If anyone has a record of when Gotthilf came over, please let me know.
There are also two other Schievelbein families; one in South Dakota and one in Iowa. I have recently discovered that these two families are also related to my Schievelbein lines. It seems the rest of the family went to Iowa and then on to South Dakota. I'll be adding that info to the site soon.
Other spellings of the name: Schivelbein | Schiffelbein | Schifelbein | Schiefelbein | Schieffelbein. I've even seen some spelling with the ending of "bien". The "v" is pronounced as an "f", so that change is understandable.
Some of the relatives used these alternate spellings after they came to America. It is unknown why they used different spellings. Maybe exact spellings weren't all that important or they are simply typos. Today most of our relatives use the spelling: Schievelbein.
Just north of where the TX / NE Schievelbein family came from is a town named Schivelbein. It used to be in the state of Pommern in Germany. In 1945 this area was given to Poland. The city is now called by its Polish name, Swidwin. Who knows if there is any direct connection between the town and our relatives.
Click on the name of the brother in the navigation links at the top of the page to view more family info there. At the bottom of this page is info on more Schievelbein families in other places.
A special thanks to the authors of the two books that have been published about Schievelbeins in the past. The first book "The Wilhelm Carl, Gotthilf Schievelbein and Siegfried Schievelbein Descendants" by Hilda Puhlmann was written quite a few year ago. The second book "A Heritage of Faith" by Mary Lou Weber was written in 1990 about the pioneer families in Araphoe, Nebraska. My hope is to consolidate all the facts about the Schievelbein families into one location and to update the familly events and keep them curent here on the site. Thanks to all the family members who help me with this enormous task. A special thanks to Carla and Gayla in Nebraska for being my steady link to the family there.
